The History of the Renault 5 Turbo 1
"The little French Pest”
The Renault 5 Turbo has just turned 40, the sports version of the well-known French utility car produced since 1972 which, in this version, gains muscle as a bodybuilder. Produced by the transalpine brand between 1980 and 1985, the “supercharged beast” has managed to earn a poster in the room of many fans.
Born as a basis for the rally variant, it also had some success in this dimension, winning some races of the world championship.
The project took off in the late seventies and gave a new genetic identity to the Renault 5, distorted in style and mechanical architecture, thanks also to the central rear arrangement of the powerful engine, combined with rear-wheel drive.
The stylistic impact was really strong, very striking. We certainly cannot speak of a car full of grace, but its look does not leave you indifferent and, if you take it, it does so incisively, fueling the fever of passion. In the road version, the Renault 5 Turbo delivers 160 horsepower, developed by a 1.4-liter in-line 4-cylinder engine, which pushes vigorously, especially at high revs, thanks to the turbocharging, with a pressure of 0.86 bar.
Remarkable performances, which intimidated many supercars of the time, especially in the passage from 0 to 100 kph, covered in just 6″5. The maximum speed reached was of 200 kph.
The Renault 5 Turbo marked the introduction into the range of the technical expertise of the turbocharger acquired in the races and prefigured the customs clearance of this technology on an industrial scale. Its appeal still today makes it a flattered, sought-after, desired car.
