A superlative grand touring car, the 1966 Lamborghini 400 GT is also a historic artefact of the evolution and growth of one of the world’s finest sports car manufacturers. Its development began in 1965 when Lamborghini sought to increase both the power and the interior room of its first production car, the 350 GT. The initial step of this project was to fit a larger engine to the 350 GT, and thus the ‘interim’ 400 GT was born.
The two-seat 400 GT features a 320-brake horsepower 4.0-litre V-12, essentially the same 350 GT engine but with a longer stroke, backed by a fully synchromeshed five-speed transmission. The combination of the 350 GT’s sleek two-seat platform with the more powerful 4.0-litre engine made this an impressive, though unfortunately temporary, offering. Lamborghini ultimately changed the body design to accommodate a larger four-seat interior and began production on the 400 GT 2+2, ending the ‘interim’ production after just 23 cars.
This example of those stop-gap 400 GTs was delivered new in Spain, reportedly to the president of the CD Malaga football club. It was first registered in Madrid and ultimately found its way into a garage in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. There it sat for many years before being purchased as a ‘barn find’ by noted Italian automobile expert.
After repatriating the Lamborghini to Italy, the Italian expert sold the car to a new owner who requested a cosmetic refreshening of the exterior. He painstakingly removed by hand the original paint from the body and steel tube chassis and made repairs to the rear of the body and door panels. He then repainted the car in its original shade of Vincennes Grey Metallic. With the exterior cosmetic work finished, the owner completed a mechanical refurbishment and installed a new interior in the original shade of tan leather.
Having seen limited mileage since the completion of the work, this exquisite Lamborghini 400 GT ‘Interim’ is in beautiful condition throughout and is ready to be enjoyed.
